Auxiliary verbs help us emphasize and clarify ideas. Students can tap into their knowledge of forming questions and negatives to gain confidence with the emphatic use of helping verbs. If you’d like to take intermediate students through the hows and whys, consider using my slides.

– The first group of slides test students’ ability to identify auxiliary verb.
– The second group of slides explains uses of auxiliary verbs beyond questions, negative forms, perfect forms, and modals.
– The final two slides offer a practice task. Answers are provided.

Suggestion: Students can create their own fill-in-the-blank sentences. Have them swap sentences with a partner or collect all the sentences and present them for the class to complete together.
