Both of them refer to future actions. Although in some cases they can be interchangeable, because there are multiple ways of expressing the same thing in English. However, knowing which one you think is best really just depends on what you鈥檙e trying to say.

Like I said before, you can use both WILL and GOING TO in the same sentence with no change in the meaning, but you really have to ask yourself what it is you鈥檙e really trying to say. So, you have to pay attention to the different types of situations so you can understand which of these two choices will be the best option when expressing a future action.

WHEN TO USE 鈥淲ILL鈥
Will can be used in expressing rapid decisions, or a future action that you have decided on at the moment of speaking.
Examples:

鈥淚鈥檓 thirsty! I think I will buy a drink.鈥

鈥淭his is so expensive! But I will be able to afford this someday.鈥

鈥淥kay, I鈥檒l go to your party!鈥

Remember also that the condensed form of I will is I鈥檒l and will not is won鈥檛. These are very much commonly used in conversational English.

Will can also be used when you are making an offer. For example:
鈥淚 will help with you your luggage, they look heavy!鈥

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 go there alone, I鈥檒l go with you.鈥

鈥淚鈥檒l get the mop for you.鈥

It鈥檚 also used for making promises.
鈥淚 will keep your secret.鈥

鈥淚 won鈥檛 let you down!鈥

鈥淚鈥檒l be there, I promise!鈥

And for making threats, which are very similar to promises but can be connoted negatively.
鈥淚鈥檒l break your nose if you hurt her.鈥

鈥淚f you don鈥檛 pull yourself together, I鈥檒l never let you see me again.鈥

鈥淚 won鈥檛 pay for damages if you drive recklessly.鈥

USE WILL FOR A FAR FURTHER FUTURE ACTION
One important detail about 鈥淲ILL鈥 is that it is most often used to discuss things or situations that may take a long time to happen. Here are some examples of situations when he expression 鈥淲ILL鈥 is used:

Dreams
鈥淪omeday I will learn another language.鈥

Promises
鈥淚 promise I鈥檒l call you tonight!鈥

To express actions that are far into the future
鈥淚 will get married someday.鈥

Requests
鈥淲ill you buy a hamburger for me? Thank you!鈥

To discuss a fact
鈥淚鈥檒l graduate from college next year鈥

After making a decision
鈥淵es! I will marry you!鈥

Help/Volunteer
鈥淚鈥檒l volunteer at this event tonight!鈥

WHEN TO USE 鈥淕OING TO鈥
One huge difference in using GOING TO versus WILL, is that you use GOING TO when the action was already decided on even before speaking of it.
Examples:

鈥淚鈥檓 going to take some time off work this year.鈥

鈥淭hey are going to adopt a child.鈥

鈥淗e鈥檚 going to quit his job and become an artist.鈥

Going to can also be used for a future action when there are signs or evidence that it is likely going to happen.
鈥淭hey鈥檝e been together forever. He鈥檚 going to propose soon.鈥

鈥淭his team is playing so bad today. They鈥檙e going to lose!鈥

鈥淚 shouldn鈥檛 have eaten that much! I鈥檓 gonna throw up!鈥

The condensed form of going to is gonna. And it鈥檚 worth practicing this in your conversations to sound more natural. Stick with 鈥済oing to鈥 in more formal communication, though.
