How to gamify exam preparation with the Pearson English Warm Up app

Our Warm Up practice app helps students who are studying for the Pearson English International Certificate (previously PTE General). Today, we’re excited to announce some great new features that draw on elements of gamification and personalization, making the learning experience more motivating and fun. The updates also allow learners to practice with items from the new computer-based version of the test, launching in September this year.

If you work in education, you’ll know that students learn best when they’re engaged, challenged and enjoying themselves. Gamification is a natural way to inject some excitement into your exam preparation classes. Some features of gamified learning include avatars, peer competition, point scoring and badges.

Flexible learning for International Certificate candidates

If your students are stuck in a queue, sitting on a train or killing time on their lunch break, instead of scrolling through social media they can do some practice questions instead! The Warm Up app is the ideal study tool for learners to study in their free time outside the classroom.

What are the benefits of studying in free moments?

Lots of practice will help to build their confidence. They’ll also get to know the different task types that they’ll be asked to do in the exam.

How does gamification help?

The new gamified updates should help to engage your students with their preparation for their International Certificate exam and get them excited about their study plan!

Let’s take a look:

1. Personalizing learning

When your student downloads the app, they first need to set up their user profile. They can then personalize it with their own avatar. Avatars appeal to students’ imagination and sense of fantasy. They will enjoy creating personas that have characteristics that they have, or wish they had. They’ll be able to choose from a selection of cute cartoon animals, like monkeys, pandas and foxes. Or, if they prefer, they can upload their own photograph to the app.

Having their own avatar creates more of a fun experience as they complete the different skills-based tasks in the Pearson English Warm Up app.

2. Tracking progress

The Warm Up app measures student progress in a few different ways.  As they progress through variety of different task types, students can see the percentage of questions they have completed. This means they’ll be able to see exactly how much studying they’ve done, and feel even more motivated as they go.

Students also earn 1 point per correct answer. As they gather points, they’ll be able to compare their progress with other students, motivating them to do their best. They can also earn bonus points for redoing task types. This is an excellent way to revise and strengthen their exam skills – after all, practice makes perfect!

3. Reaching milestones

Badges are an important part of the gamification of online learning – they show achievements and validate a student’s hard work. The chance of earning badges encourages students to continue interacting with a game or an app.

Students can now earn badges based on the tasks that they’ve completed in the Warm Up app. The badges act like milestones on the learning journey, help learners to set goals, and keep them motivated with small rewards.

4. Adding Competition

Another new feature is the leaderboard. This adds another element of competition and motivates students to do their best. They can play other people in their country, level by level.

A sense of competition can really inspire students to go the extra mile when they’re completing tasks, meaning that they’re getting the most out of their study time.
