Learning how to tip in the United States can be confusing. A good rule: if a server comes to your table and takes your order, gives you refills, etc., you probably need to leave a tip anywhere from 10% to 20%. Places like this are called “sit-down restaurants.”

If you order food from places like Subway or Starbucks or McDonald’s, you do not need to leave a tip. Even if the receipt from the machine leaves an empty space for you to leave a tip with your credit card, it is not required. However, at a sit-down restaurant where a server takes your order, it is highly encouraged and is often required.
