How to use assessment products to prepare your students for success

Assessment is an indispensable part of language learning. It can contribute significantly to a learner’s success in mastering a language. However, when done wrong, it can easily fail to serve the learner’s actual needs.

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) products were created to provide teachers with tools that help them assess their students’ skills in a way that sets learners up for success not just in the classroom but in the real world.

In the coming weeks, you will have the chance to join three webinars about using PTE General.

Here’s what you will learn during the three sessions.

1. Motivation and assessment: Revealing the iceberg with David Booth

Assessment can provide a strong motivation for students to learn. However, demonstrating your skills and knowledge in language learning may not be as straightforward as solving a math problem or reciting a poem.

In this session, David Booth will look at how teachers can foster motivation, particularly in teenagers, by applying a growth mindset and focusing on achievement rather than failure. He will highlight the role of language tests such as the Pearson Test of English (PTE) General in improving the learning experience and making sure that the way we assess students truly serves their interests and needs and is genuinely useful for them.

Watch David’s session live on Wednesday 20th March.

2. Stop teaching to the test and start teaching for success with Brian Engquist

Preparing your class for an external English proficiency exam often means spending considerable time teaching to the test – studying the exam format, teaching exam strategies and doing practice tests. However, we should always keep in mind that exams are supposed to test the language skills our students will need in the real world, and our teaching should reflect that.

In this webinar, Brian Engquist will use examples from the Pearson Test of English (PTE) General, how the daily activities you do in class can help you prepare your students not only for an exam but also for real-world situations where they will have to demonstrate their English language skills.

Watch Brian’s session live on Thursday 28th March.

3. Tools for helping learners chart their own course towards English proficiency with Bill Bonk

The time spent in a classroom is simply not enough for most language learners to reach the level of proficiency they aim for. Many learners seek opportunities outside of the classroom to practice and improve their skills. The methods they choose vary between the more traditional (studying vocabulary, reading) and the more innovative (watching videos, interacting through video calls or chat, etc).

In this webinar, Bill Bonk will take a look at how teachers can leverage these student-driven activities as well as use tools like the GSE Teacher Toolkit to help students chart their own course towards English proficiency, based on their own needs and current level.

Watch Bill’s session live on Wednesday 3rd April.
