In this lesson, you’re going to see three quotes from Game of Thrones (S8 Ep3) that are interesting for English learners.

1: 鈥淭HERE鈥橲 NO NEED TO EXECUTE ME, SIR DAVOS, I鈥橪L BE DEAD BEFORE THE DAWN.鈥

This is what Melisandre said to Sir Davos when she arrived at Winterfell. To execute someone is to kill someone. If you say there is no need to do something you’re saying it’s not necessary.

For example:
– there’s no need to study so much grammar
– there’s no need to worry. I’m sure they’re fine.

She also used the simple future to predict her own future.

Here’s a conversational lesson on predicting the future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de9BaZeLPII

2: 鈥淵OU SAID WE鈥橠 MEET AGAIN.鈥

Arya said this to Melisandre.

We’d = we would

This is the past for “we will.” In a past episode, Melisandre said to Arya, “we will meet again.”

Here are more examples:
-you said you would come to the party
-he said he would do it but he didn’t

3: 鈥淢AYBE WE SHOULD鈥橵E STAYED MARRIED.鈥

Tyrion said this to Sansa. This is an example of use should for past situations.

Tyrion was married to Sansa but they didn’t stay together. Tyrion is saying that maybe that was a mistake. That, maybe, it would have been better to stay married.

More examples:
-I shouldn’t have said that
– He should have scored
