Hey guys, Mr. Finn here! I just want to quickly share with you my three tried and true methods for learning a new language. am an American who has been living in Brazil for 10 years. When I came out here I didn’t speak any Portuguese, except for the very (and I stress the word ‘very’) basics! They have worked for me and I’m sure they can work for you too!
My 3 tips:
1st – You’ve got to want it! No one can be forced to do anything, and if they are forced, the quality won’t be good! If you don’t have the desire , you will never get it. Have you ever heard the saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink”? Well, that goes with learning a language.
2nd – You must dedicate yourself! It won’t happen by itself. It won’t happen by osmosis. And it won’t happen over night either! You need to enjoy what you do in English if you want to learn it naturally. Listen to music in English. Watch movies and series in English (without subtitles). Play (online) video games or read books/magazines/comics. Whatever you love, do it in English. The more you dedicate to it, the faster you will get it!
3rd – You must try! Too many people suffer from the disease of “shyness”. The only way you will improve your speaking and pronunciation is by speaking! Do be afraid of making mistakes … they are one of the most important steps in learning!
Remember to get out there and practice your English!
