Sometimes students will reveal an interesting combination of strengths and weaknesses, so it’s up to us to design lessons that meet their unique needs. I’ve mentioned that I have one advanced student with strong mastery of academic vocabulary, but less familiarity with general words and idiomatic expressions. In a previous post, I explained how I incorporated boxing expressions into a lesson that based activities on the motivational book Daring Greatly by Brené Brown.

More recently, I challenged my student to identify types of ships and boats. This led into a look at sailing idioms. I’ll be following up with a review quiz soon, but if you want to test your own students on a mix of general vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, please check out the following files. I’m sharing both PDFs and JPEGs for your convenience. Have fun! Extend practice into meaningful production with discussion and real-life examples.
